The typical enterprise website redesign and development launch is fraught with excitement and possibility. There is nothing better than the sweet fragrance of a freshly minted website, especially when the website is as strategic and functional as it is beautiful and usable.

After all the high-fives and celebratory laps around the office comes the sobering reality of maintaining the website for the next three to five years. When a website has hundreds of content contributors and publishers, a beautiful website can quickly wobble into a sprawling heap of inaccessible, off-brand, poorly written, and dangerously contradictory information.

As the Artificial Intelligence revolution rages on, we continue to invent advantages for our clients. Knowing that website governance and distributed content management at the enterprise level can make herding cats seem like child’s play.

You might hear “AI” and think of futuristic robots, but in the context of your website, it’s about practical tools that can significantly enhance content workflows, ensure content quality, and provide deeper insights.

Imagine a world where your website’s content creation is more intuitive, information is consistently accurate, and editorial guidelines are proactively managed (and enforced)–while substantially lowering your cost of ownership.

For the sake of this article, we’ll share what we’ve done for clients using the Drupal CMS, but these strategies are 100% agnostic.

So, what exactly could AI bring to your Drupal site, especially for your content creators and administrators? Let’s explore some exciting possibilities:

Intelligent Content Entry & Augmentation for Efficiency

Content creation is a time-consuming process. AI can serve as a powerful co-pilot for your content team, streamlining the authoring and publishing process.

  • Automated Summarization & SEO Metadata:Imagine drafting a long article in Drupal, and AI automatically generates a concise summary, compelling meta descriptions, and relevant keywords for SEO. We’ve trained an AI module and service to take content as input (e.g., an article body), process it, and return structured data, such as summaries and suggested tags/meta descriptions, which can then be directly applied to your Drupal nodes, saving editors and publishers significant time and improving content discoverability.
  • Content Generation & Ideation:For less critical blog posts or articles, we’ve trained AI with the client’s brand platform (messaging architecture, proof points, tone, vision, mission, promise, values, do and don’t do rules, etc.), offer (services, curicula, or products), and facts to help overcome writer’s block by suggesting initial draft outlines or expanding on key points.
  • Style and Tone Checking:We’ve trained AI to analyze content upon entry, ensuring it adheres to the organization’s specific style guide, brand voice, and reading level, and provides real-time feedback to content creators, thereby preserving a consistent voice throughout the entire website.
  • Image & Media Tagging:We’ve trained AI to analyze and automatically add descriptive alt text, captions, and relevant tags to image and video uploads, significantly improving accessibility and searchability while reducing the publisher’s workload.
  • Automated Moderation:For user-generated content (comments, forums), our AI module proactively flags or filters out spam or inappropriate language, maintaining a positive and safe community environment without constant manual oversight. Our approach involves making secure API calls from Drupal to AI services, allowing these services to perform tasks such as content analysis or classification, which then inform actions within your Drupal content moderation workflow.
  • Fact-Checking and Accuracy Support:While not a replacement for human oversight, AI can assist in cross-referencing information or flagging potential inconsistencies in factual claims against established knowledge bases, providing an extra layer of content integrity.

Looking Ahead: Robust Content Governance & Editorial Compliance

In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving digital landscape, maintaining editorial standards and ensuring legal compliance across your content is crucial. AI can play a significant role in managing and governing the quality of content. We haven’t built this yet, but it’s on our roadmap.

  • Content Auditing and Gaps Analysis:AI can analyze your existing content inventory to identify outdated articles, content gaps, or opportunities for consolidation. This helps in maintaining a fresh and relevant content library, aligning with your content strategy. We can configure AI models to analyze content structures and metadata, recommending improvements or highlighting areas that need attention.
  • Editorial Workflow Automation:For complex publishing workflows, AI can assist in ensuring all necessary fields are filled, content meets length requirements, or specific tags are applied before publication. This helps enforce editorial policies automatically.
  • Legal Compliance Checks: AI can be trained to identify specific keywords, phrases, or disclosures that must appear (or must not appear) in particular content types. This technology can be trained to identify pages that are or border on the side of legal concern. While we’ll never create a technology that guarantees complete and total legal compliance, this tool will at least comb through the website and identify areas of potential concern, allowing a real-life person to review and address them.

If you’re curious about how AI can streamline your website’s content management, lower your cost of ownership, enhance quality, and strengthen your editorial governance, we’d love to chat! Let’s explore the possibilities together and start envisioning the next generation of your digital platform.
